Salt Water Pool Systems

Salt Water Pool Systems
Operation, Installation and Maintenance

Using a salt chlorine generator is one of the most efficient and comfortable ways to sanitize pool water.

This type of system allows you to:

  • reduce skin and eye irritation
  • minimize unpleasant chlorine odours
  • limit fading of swimwear and surfaces
  • choose a more environmentally friendly solution
  • reduce annual maintenance costs

Through an electrolysis process, the generator converts dissolved salt into natural chlorine that is continuously produced, stable, and effective.

Watch our video capsules to better understand how a salt system works, how to maintain it, and how to winterize it properly.

FAQ – Salt Water Pool Systems

1. What is a salt water pool system?

A salt system uses electrolysis to convert dissolved salt into natural chlorine. This provides continuous, stable sanitation that is gentler on skin and eyes.

2. Why choose a salt system instead of traditional chlorine?

Salt systems reduce irritation, odours, and fading, require less maintenance, and are often more cost-effective long term. The water also feels softer and more comfortable.

3. How much salt should I add to my pool?

The amount depends on your pool’s volume and current ppm level. Refer to our charts to determine the exact quantity needed.

4. Do I need to add salt every week?

No. Salt does not evaporate. You only need to add more when water is lost due to splash-out, backwashing, leaks, or heavy rain dilution.

5. Does a salt system eliminate chlorine smell?

It greatly reduces odours because chlorine is produced steadily, which limits chloramines responsible for the smell.

6. Can a salt system damage my pool?

No, as long as salt levels remain within recommended ranges (typically around 3000–3200 ppm). Proper maintenance prevents corrosion.

7. How often should a salt system be maintained?

Check salt levels regularly, clean the cell when needed, and test water balance just like a traditional pool.

8. Can salt systems be used with above-ground pools?

Yes. Salt systems are compatible with most above-ground and in-ground pools.

9. Does the system work in cold water?

Below about 15 °C, most generators reduce or stop production. This is normal because chlorine demand is lower in cold water.

10. Is special maintenance required when opening or closing the pool?

Yes. Opening and winterizing require specific steps such as cleaning the cell, shutting down the unit, and checking levels. Our videos explain each step.
